How can I tell if my elderberry syrup has gone bad?
Chances are, you’re going to use up your elderberry before it will go bad, especially if you’re practicing wellness and using it every day.
The most common way elderberry “goes bad” is fermenting. While some people intentionally ferment their elderberry for probiotic benefits (and in making mead/wine), it isn’t the most delicious experience. Here’s how to spot when your elderberry is fermenting:
- The juice fizzes when you open the cap
- The liquid smells like vinegar
- You see growth (extremely rare)
If you’ll be traveling or otherwise not using your elderberry for long periods of time, consider freezing it in ice cube trays! They make the perfect 1-2T portions.
Can I overdose on elderberry syrup?
A common mistake people make is comparing elderberry syrup to medicine.
Plant-based nutrition helps our bodies do what they naturally do best. Too much of anything can cause problems in your body.
If you’re taking large swigs of elderberry straight from the bottle, once an hour, you’ll be able to expect your bathroom habits to increase substantially.
Please enjoy elderberry in a moderate way, up to 4 times daily, and you’ll give your body what it needs.
Is your elderberry syrup a good deal?
Purchasing elderberry syrup from a health food or conventional store is expensive – upwards of $4 per ounce. Our elderberry products are delicious and affordable at ~ $1.50 per ounce, a 63% savings! Buying small not only ensures artisanal quality but saves you money, too.
